| Along the western perimeter of the Temple Mount complex lies the Western Wall (the Kotel), sole remains of the great Temple of Herod that was destroyed on the 9th of Av in the year 70 CE. The Kotel, for almost two millennium, has served as the anchor of Jewish yearning for the return to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple in the days of the Messiah. Jewish faithful travel to Israel from around the world to pray to God at this holiest of sites and to leave God a note in the cracks between the ancient stones. The Kotel lies just hundreds of meters from the Moslem Dome of the Rock and from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the traditional site of the Crucifixion of Christ), making Jerusalem one of the main spiritual centers of the world.
