ancient Roman capital of Judea

Along the coast are the remains of the ancient Roman capital of Judea, Cesaria. Herod the Great transformed the city into a major port and built an impressive sea front theater. In order to supply fresh water to the tens of thousands of inhabitants, Herod constructed an aqueduct that led water from the slopes of Mt. Carmel to the city center. Large pieces of this engineering wonder can be seen today.
