| The King David Hotel, constructed n the 1920's served as the Military Headquarters of the British Mandate. After the Holocaust, the Jews of Mandatory Palestine wanted to open the gates to Jewish immigration to bring the remnant of European Jewry home. The British refused and forbid "illegal immigration". Jewish British tensions escalated as the Jewish underground movements struck at British military installations. In July 1946, Jewish guerillas planted a bomb in the basement of the King David Hotel. 74 people lost their lives in this attack that led the British to announce their departure from Palestine.
