The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, the lowest spot on the face of the earth (1200 feet blow sea level) is the major natural resource of Israel. It provides potash (used for fertilizers) and magnesium metal (not to mention table salt!). The water and mud of the Dead Sea are known for their medicinal values and are a treatment for millions of people suffering from a variety of skin diseases. Due to the high concentration of minerals, one is actually able to float on the Dead Sea water, and read the news paper! Israel is developing an innovative system of solar energy plants that will some day transform this barren area in to a bridge of peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
